The Pocketbook plant (Calceolaria x herbeohybrida) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Central and South America. The original species is a small shrub or perennial herb, but the species currently available are improved varieties. It is not tolerant of cold, heat, or humidity, and is treated as an annual in Japan. The leaves are ovate, and grow opposite each other on the base and branches. It has two petals, with the lower petal being larger and shaped like a purse. It is called "kinchaku-so" in Japanese.
