The rattlesnake plant (Calathea crotalifera) belongs to the family Marantaceae. It is an evergreen herb that is distributed from Mexico to Peru. This herb grows in humid forests and disturbed areas, at an altitude of 10-900 m. It is a caulescent plant, which reach a size of 1.6-3 m in height. The basal leaves are cauline, laminae are oblong, 33-110 cm long and 16-55 cm wide with rounded tips. It blooms small yellow flowers between the yellow bracts in alternating rows in spring.
