The Calathea taeniosa belongs to the family Marantaceae. It is an evergreen herb that is native to Brazil. It grows to about 30 cm tall and forms clumps. The leaves are elliptic, pointed and irregular, and the petiole is purple and covered with hairs. The leaf surface is dark green with silvery white stripes, and the underside is dark green to grayish green. White or pale yellow tubular flowers, surrounded by brown bracts, are produced at the tips of short flower stalks.
