ヨーロッパから北アメリカに分布しています。山地のやぶや森の半日陰に生え、高さは４０〜１００センチになります。茎には稜があり、剛毛が密生しています。根生葉は心形で３裂し、茎葉は卵形から披針形で、どちらにも鋸歯と粗い毛が生えます。７月から９月ごろ、ふじ青色または淡青色の花を咲かせます。花冠は鐘形で、長い柔毛が生えます。和名では「ひげぎきょう（髭桔梗）」と呼ばれます。

キキョウ科ホタルブクロ属の多年草で、学名は Campanula trachelium。英名は Nettle-leaved bellflower。

The nettle-leaved bellflower (Campanula trachelium) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe and North America. This herb grows in mountane semi-shade place of thickets and forests and can reach 40-100 cm in height. The stems are angular and bristly. The basal leaves are cordate and trilobate, and the cauline leaves are ovate to lanceolate, both with toothed edges and rough-hairs. The flowers are violet-blue or pale blue and bloom from July to September. The corolla is bell-shaped 30-40 mm long with long soft hairs.
