大西洋の東端にあるカナリア諸島の固有種です。太い塊根があり、そこから毎年３メートルほどの中空の茎が伸びます。半蔓性で近くの植物などによじ登ります。葉は三角形から鉾形で対生し、縁にはゆるやかな鋸歯があります。春、葉腋にオレンジ色のベル状の花を咲かせます。果実は大きな卵形の液果で、熟すとオレンジ色になり、食用になるそうです。

キキョウ科カナリナ属の小低木で、学名は Canarina canariensis。英名は Canary bellflower。

The Canary bellflower (Canarina canariensis) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is a shrub that is endemic to the Canary Islands on the eastern edge of the Atlantic Ocean. It has a thick tuberous root, from which grows a hollow stem about 3 m long each year. It is semi-vining and climbs on nearby plants. The leaves are triangular to hastate, opposite, and have gently serrated edges. Orange bell-shaped flowers bloom in the axils of the leaves in spring. The fruit is a large ovate berry that turns orange when ripe and is edible.
