中央アメリカおよび西インド諸島が原産です。熱帯の果樹で、高さは１２メートルほどになります。湿潤な熱帯では周年、葉腋に芳香のある小さな白い花を咲かせます。果実は卵形または紡錘形で、先端が尖り、果肉は生食されたり、飲料やジャム、デザートなどに利用されます。ニコチン酸やビタミンＡ・Ｃが多く含まれるそうです。

アカテツ科アカテツ属の常緑高木で、学名は Pouteria campechiana。英名は Canistel、Eggfruit。

The Canistel (Pouteria campechiana) belongs to Sapotaceae (the Sapote family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to Central America and the West Indies. This is a tropical fruit tree and can reach about 12 m in height. The scented small white flowers are borne on the axils throughout most of the year. The fruits are ovate or spindle-shaped with acute tips. They are used for raw diet and the raw material for juice, jam or desert. The fruits contain rich niacin, vitamin A and C.
