アメリカの西部およびメキシコ北部に分布しています。山地や高原の峡谷にある湿った場所に生え、高さは12メートルほどになります。葉は光沢のある濃緑色で対生し、掌状に5裂します。葉は秋に赤色や黄色に紅葉します。早春、葉の展開と同時に、下垂した花序に黄色い花を咲かせます。果実は翼果で、直角に開いた翼があります。樹液はほのかに甘く、ところによってはメープルシュガーの作るのに利用されます。
カエデ科カエデ属の落葉中高木で、学名は Acer grandidentatum。英名は Canyon maple。
The canyon maple (Acer grandidentatum) beolngs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a semi-tall decidous tree that is distributed to western United States and northern Mexico. This tree grows in moist soils of canyon in mountains and plateaus, and can reach about 12 m in height. The leaves are shiny dark green, opposite, and divided into 5 lobes palmately. They turn red or yellow in autumn. The yellow flowers come in drooping clusters with new leaves in early spring. The fruits are samaras with right angle opened wings. Canyon maple has sweetish sap used locally to prepare maple sugar.
