The Karanda (Carissa carandas) belongs to Apocynaceae (the Dogbane family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the Deccan Plateau of India. It is now cultivated in the dry tropical regions of Southeast Asia. The trunk has sharp spines, and the leaves are elliptic and opposite. From spring to fall, it produces white flowers similar to those of the oleander. The fruits are ovoid, ripen to a reddish color, and are eaten raw or used to make jellies, jams and desserts.
