南アフリカの原産種が自然交配したものと考えられています。アメリのオレゴン州南部からメキシコにかけての太平洋側に分布しています。海岸や断崖に生え、地面を這って広がります。葉は３稜があり多肉質です。４月から９月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして濃いピンク色の花を咲かせます。日差しのあるときだけ開花します。

ツルナ科カルポブローツス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Carpobrotus chilensis。英名は Sea fig、Ice plant。

The sea fig (Carpobrotus chilensis) belongs to Aizoaceae (the Ice plant family). It is an evergreen herb that is considered a natural hybrid between South African original species. It is distributed to the Pacific Ocean Side of North America, southward from southern Oregon to Mexico. This herb grows on seashore and bluffs, and spreads by creeping on the grounds. The leaves are triangular and sucullent. The dark pink flowers bloom on the flowering stalks from April to September. They open only during sunlight.
