The Ravenfoot sedge (Carex crus-corvi) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from southeastern Canada to the central and eastern United States. It grows in marshes to swamps, riverbanks, and wet meadows, and is 60-90 cm tall. The culms are triangular in cross-section and erect. From May to June, the flowering culms extend and branch out, producing spikelets. The fruit is a small achene, enclosed in a perigynium (a bag-like bract). The specific epithet is derived from the Latin word "crus" (leg) + "corvus" (raven).
