ヨーロッパの中部、アルプスからピレネー山脈に分布しています。標高８００〜２４００メートルの草地や岩礫地などに生え、高さは１５〜６０センチになります。葉は長い披針形で、縁には先端に鋭い棘のある粗い鋸歯があります。６月から８月ごろ、茎頂に赤紫色の頭花を咲かせます。総苞片は開出します。

キク科ヒレアザミ属の二年草で、学名は Carduus defloratus。英名は Alpine thistle。

The Alpine thistle (Carduus defloratus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a biennial herb that is native to central Europe, the Alps and the Pyrenees mountains. This herb grows in montane grasslands or screes 800-2400 m elevation and can reach 15-60 cm in height. The leaves are long lanceolate and the edges have coarse teeth with acute spiny tips. The magenta flowerheads come on the stem apices from June to August.
