南アフリカのケープ地方が原産です。北アメリカでもカリフォルニア州からメキシコに帰化しています。海岸沿いの砂丘や道端、断崖などに生え、高さは２０センチほどになります。長さが２．７メートルにも伸びる地下茎で広がります。葉は断面が三角形の多肉質です。４月から１０月ごろ、葉のあいだから黄色またはピンク色で、直径８〜１０センチの花を咲かせます。食用にもなるそうです。 |

ツルナ科カルポブローツス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Carpobrotus edulis。英名は Hottentot fig、Ice plant。 |

The Hottentot fig (Carpobrotus edulis) belongs to Aizoaceae (the Ice plant family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the Cape region of South Africa. It is also naturalized in North America from California to Mexico. It grows on sand dunes, roadsides, and cliffs along the coast and is about 20 cm tall. It spreads by underground stems that can grow up to 2.7 m long. From April to October, yellow or pink flowers, 8 to 10 cm in diameter, bloom between the leaves. They are also edible. |
