The Hottentot fig (Carpobrotus edulis) belongs to Aizoaceae (the Ice plant family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the Cape region of South Africa. It is also naturalized in North America from California to Mexico. It grows on sand dunes, roadsides, and cliffs along the coast and is about 20 cm tall. It spreads by underground stems that can grow up to 2.7 m long. From April to October, yellow or pink flowers, 8 to 10 cm in diameter, bloom between the leaves. They are also edible.
