南アフリカ北部のクワズールー・ナタール州が原産です。よく分枝して、高さは６メートル以上になります。葉は濃緑色の卵形で光沢があり、対生します。花は蝋質の白色で星形をしていて、ほとんど一年中咲きます。果実は赤色の液果で食べることができ、甘いクランベリーに似た味です。矮性の園芸品種が数多く作出されています。和名では「おおばなカリッサ（大花カリッサ）」と呼ばれます。

キョウチクトウ科カリッサ属の常緑低木で、学名は Carissa macrocarpa。英名は Natal plum。

The Natal plum (Carissa macrocarpa) belongs to Apocynaceae (the Dogbane family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to northern South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal privince. This tree is much-branched and can reach up to 6 m in height. The leaves are dark glossy green, ovate and arranged in opposite. The flowers are white, star-shaped, waxy and bloom almost all year long. The fruits are red berries, edible and taste like sweet cranberries. Many dwarf cultivars have been bred. It is called "Oobana-carissa" in Japanese.
