インドからラオス、タイが原産です。高さは２０メートルあるいはそれ以上になります。単幹で円筒形、しばしば中央部が膨れ、基部には支持機能がある気根のコーンがあります。葉は２回羽状複葉、緑色で魚の尾びれのような形の小葉がつきます。このヤシは一回結実性（一回だけ結実し、そして枯れる）。その花序の長さは６メートル、またはそれ以上になります。果実は、淡い緑色で熟すと赤色に変化し、刺激性が強く毒性のある蓚酸塩に満ちています。

ヤシ科カルヨタ属の常緑高木で、学名は Caryota obtusa。英名は Giant fishtail palm、Thai giant caryota。

Giant fishtail palm (Caryota obtusa) belongs to the Aracaceae (the Palm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to India, Laos and Thailand. This palm can reach 20 m or more in height. The trunk is solitary, cylindrical, and often swollen by the central part and provided at the base with a cone of aerial roots having a support function. The leaves are bipinnate with medium green fishtail shaped leaflets. It is monocarpic (it fructifies only once and then dies). Its inflorescence can reach 6 m or more in length. The fruit is light green turning to reddish when ripe, full of very irritating and toxic oxalates.
