The Early sedge (Carex praecox) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Europe to Siberia and Mongolia. It grows in moist meadows, marshes, and stream banks in temperate regions and is 15-60 cm long. The stems are triangular and thin, and the leaves are 1 to 1.5 cm wide, linear, and flexible. Around June, small greenish-brown flowers bloom in 3-6 spikes at the top of the stem. The male spikes are located below and the female spikes above.
