The Greater pond sedge (Carex riparia) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is widely distributed in Europe, western and central Asia, and also in North Africa. It grows in calm rivers and swamps and grows to a height of about 90 cm. The rhizome grows long and has fibrous grayish-brown scales. The cross section of the stem is triangular. The leaves are linear, about 15 mm wide, stiff, and erect. Dark brown spikes are produced in early summer. There are three to four male spikelets at the stem apex, and two to four female spikelets below. The fruit is a oblong-ovate achene.
