アメリカのカリフォルニア州とオレゴン州それにメキシコのバハカリフォルニアに分布しています。乾燥した茂みや海岸の断崖などに生え、高さは１５〜６０センチになります。茎は紫色を帯び、葉は線形から狭い長楕円形をしています。３月から５月ごろ、赤色や黄色を帯び、短毛に被われた花を咲かせます。

ゴマノハグサ科カスティレヤ属の多年草で、学名は Castilleja affinis。英名は Indian paintbrush、Coast Indian paintbrush。

The Indian paintbrush (Castilleja affinis) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in California and Oregon in the United States and in Baja California, Mexico. It grows on dry bushes and coastal bluffs, and is 15 to 60 cm tall. It has purplish stems, linear to narrowly oblong leaves, and red or yellow flowers covered with short hairs that bloom from March to May.
