アメリカの北西部、ワシントン州北部からオレゴン州南部のカスケード山脈に分布しています。森林限界より下部の山地の明るい林や草原に生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。茎は直立し、披針形から広楕円形の葉が茎の上部に集まってつきます。葉の縁はふつう全縁で無柄、裏面は灰色の綿毛で被われます。７月から９月ごろ、枝先にピンク色から紫色がかった頭花を咲かせます。舌状花は６〜２０個あり、筒状花は黄色です。総苞片は４〜５列あってやや反り返り、先端が尖って縁が紫色を帯びます。

キク科シオン属の多年草で、学名は Aster ledophyllus。英名は Cascade aster。

The Cascade aster (Aster ledophyllus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is found in the northwestern United States, in the Cascade Mountains from northern Washington to southern Oregon. It grows in light forests and meadows in the mountains below the forest limit and grows 30 to 60 cm tall. The stems are erect and the lanceolate to broadly elliptic leaves are clustered at the top of the stem. Pink to purplish flower-heads bloom at the tips of branches from July to September. There are 6 to 20 ray flowers, and the tubular flowers are yellow. The bracts are slightly recurved in 4 or 5 rows, with pointed tips and purplish edges.
