The Woolly paintbrush (Castilleja lanata) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is found in the southwestern United States, from Texas to New Mexico, Arizona, and northern Mexico. It grows on dry upland slopes and deserts and is 60 to 90 cm tall. It is a semiparasitic plant, covered entirely with white hairs. The leaves are linear, about 5 cm long. It produces racemes of red to reddish-orange flowers at the ends of its branches from March to August. In Mexico, the leaves are used fresh or dried for cooking.
