The slender paintbrush (Castilleja miniata) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is native to western North America from Alaska to Ontario to California to New Mexico. This herb grows in moist meadows, forest openings, from coast to mountains, and it can reach 30-75 cm in height. The stems are usually unbranched. The leaves are flat, lanceolate and deep-green. The flowers are yellow-green floral tube with a bright red to pale orange or orange-tipped bracts, and bloom through June and July and by mid-August.
