The Catalonia chicory (Cichorium intybus var. foliosum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a variety of Chicory which is native to nothern Europe. The name comes from the province of Catalonia in Spain. The young leaves and stalks are soft and have a bitter taste. The soft young shoots are called "puntarella" and can be eaten raw as a salad.
Miyagi Prefecture and Rome, Italy became friendship sister prefectures in October 2001, due to the historical background that Tsunenaga Hasekura, a vassal of Masamune Date, had an audience with the Pope.
