原産地は熱帯アメリカ。約１１０種の原種があるそうです。葉は革質で厚く、茎はバルブを形成して木などに着生して成長します。１８世紀にカトレアを発見したイギリスのウィリアム・キャトレイにちなんで名づけられました。そしてもっとも贅沢で官能的な「らん」として、ヨーロッパ貴族たちに愛されたといいます。写真上の品種は「ワシントンポストジェネラル（cv. Washington Post General）」、中１は「ホワイトロリポップ（cv. White Lollipop）」。

The Cattleya belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the tropical America. The genus Cattleya consists of about 110 original species. This herb is an epiphyte that usually grows on the tree trunks. The leaves are leathery, thick and the stem forms bulb. The genus name was named in 18th century and derived from Sir William Cattley who discovered Cattleya labiata. Cattleya was loved as a most fine and sensual orchid by European aristocrats.
