ヨーロッパの山地、アルプスからバルカン山地、カルパチア山脈、ピレネー山脈に分布しています。標高１０００〜２６００メートルの草地や潅木帯などに生え、高さは３０〜５０センチになります。葉は羽状に浅裂し、裂片は卵形で鋸歯があります。７月から８月ごろ、紅紫色の頭花を咲かせます。舌状花は先端が鋭く３〜４裂します。

キク科ヤグルマギク属の多年草で、学名は Centaurea alpestris (syn. Centaurea scabiosa ssp. alpestris)。英名はありません。

The Centaurea alpestris belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to European mountains; the Alps, the Balkan, the Carpathians and the Pyrenees. This herb grows in montane grasslands or scrugs 1000-2600 m elevation and can reach 30-50 cm in height. The leaves are pinnatilobate with ovate segments and serrate edges. The magenta flowerheads come from July to August. The ray flowers are divided into 3-4 acute tips.
