The Giant scabiosa (Centaurea rhapontica) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in Europe, from Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia. It grows in subalpine to alpine meadows and rocky gravelly shady areas and grows 30 to 150 cm tall. The stout stems are erect and covered with white wooly hairs. The basal leaves are heart-shaped and petiolate, 30-40 cm long, while the upper leaves are lanceolate, 10-20 cm long. 6-7 cm diameter flower heads bloom at the top of the stem from June to August. The flower heads are pale purple to pink. The involucre is brown and scaly.
