Cephalophyllum alstonii belongs to Aizoaceae (the Ice plant family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the Ceres Karoo of Western Cape where is the winter-rainfall area. This herb is a creeping succulent. The leaves are triangular, about 6-12 cm long, greenish, erect, and the surface is smooth throughout. The large blood-red flowers bloom in winter (June to September).
