The phantom orchid (Cephalanthera austiniae) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that is native to western North America. This herb grows in the dim light coniferous forests, and it can reach 20-50 cm in height. It is a waxy, white, nearly leafless plant. Since it is not green and is therefore incapable of photosynthesis, it absorbs all its nutrition from the humus of the forest floor, aided by a fungus in its roots. The white or yellowish with yellow centers bloom in the raceme of stem from March to July.
