ヨーロッパから中央アジア、シベリアに分布しています。湿り気のあり日陰の林内や林縁に生え、高さは２０〜６０センチになります。根生葉はふつう心形、茎葉は卵形で対生します。６月から８月ごろ、茎頂に穂状花序をだし、小さな白色の花を咲かせます。花弁は２個で先端には切れ込みがあり、雄しべは２個、柱頭は２裂します。果実は小さな球形の堅果で、かぎ状毛が密生し、動物にくっついて種子の散布を助けます。冬になると地上部は枯れ、地下茎が残ります。

アカバナ科ミズタマソウ属の多年草で、学名は Circaea lutetiana。英名は Enchanter's nightshade。

The Enchanter's nightshade (Circaea lutetiana) belongs to Onagraceae (the Evening primrose family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Europe to central Asia and Siberia. It grows in moist, shady forests and at forest margins, and grows 20 to 60 cm tall. The basal leaves are usually heart-shaped, and the stem leaves are ovate and opposite. The petals are two in number and lobed at the tip. There are two stamens and the stigma has two lobes. The fruit is a small spherical nut with dense hairs that attach to animals to help them disperse seeds. In winter, the above-ground parts die and the underground stem remains.
