ヨーロッパから西シベリア、カザフスタンに分布しています。湿った草原や牧草地、小川沿いに生え、高さは５０〜１５０センチになります。茎は分枝しないか、ごくわずかに分枝します。葉は幅広い卵形で、全縁または羽状に深裂しています。葉はしなやかで、縁には微かな棘があります。７月から９月ごろ、茎頂に淡黄色を頭花を咲かせます。頭花は直径１５〜４０ミリ、数個が房状に集まり、黄緑色の、全縁でほとんど刺さらない苞葉に囲まれています。

The Cabbage thistle (Cirsium oleraceum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Europe to Western Siberia and Kazakhstan. It grows in moist grasslands, pastures, and along streams, reaching a height of 50 to 150 cm. The stem is either unbranched or very slightly branched. The leaves are broad and ovate, with entire margins or deeply pinnately lobed margins. They are supple and have faint spines along the edges. From July to September, pale yellow flower heads bloom at the tips of the stems. The flower heads are 15-40 mm in diameter; several are clustered in racemes and surrounded by yellowish-green bracts that are entire and almost non-prickly.
