ヨーロッパが原産です。湿地や湿り気のある野原、荒れ地や流れの縁に生え、高さは２メートル以上になります。丈夫な茎はわずかに分枝し、小さな棘で被われています。葉は大きく切れ込みがあり、縁は濃紫色で棘があります。６月から９月ごろ、先端が紫色の苞に包まれた、濃紫色の頭花を枝先に咲かせます。花には多くの種類の昆虫が訪れます。

キク科アザミ属の二年草で、学名は Cirsium palustre。英名は Marsh thistle、European swamp thistle。

The Marsh thistle (Cirsium palustre) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a biennial herb that is native to Europe. This herb grows in marshes, wet fields, moorland and beside stream, and can reach up to 2 m in height. The strong stems have few branches and are covered in small spines. The leaves are large and lobed with spiny, dark purple edges. The dark purple flower-heads with purple-tipped bracts bloom at the top of branches from June to September. The flowers are visited by a wide variety of insects.
