北アメリカの中部から西部のほとんどに自生しています。プレーリーや草地、半砂漠地、森林などに生え、高さは２１０センチ未満になります。茎は、たとえあったとしても、上部に向かって数回分岐します。葉は、縁に沿って非常に波打っていて、ふつうは浅い鋸歯状に切り込みが入ります。５月から１０月ごろ、頭花を咲かせます。頭花は白色からふじ色、ピンク色で、長さ５センチ未満です。果実は痩果で、ふつう長さは数ミリ、冠毛は最大４センチの長さになります。

キク科アザミ属の多年草で、学名は Cirsium undulatum。英名は Wavyleaf thistle、Pasture thistle。

The wavyleaf thistle (Cirsium undulatum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to much of central and western North America. This herb grows in prairie, grassland, semi-deserts, woodland, and up to a height of 210 cm. The stem branches a few times toward the top of the plant if at all. The leaves are very wavy along the edges and usually cut into shallow toothed lobes. The flower heads bloom from May to October. They are white to lavender to pink and up to 5 cm long. The fruit is an achene a few mm long with a pappus which may be up to 4 cm in length.
