The Spiny fiddlewood (Citharexylum spinosum) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is a tall evergreen or deciduous tree that is native to southern Florida in the United States, the Caribbean, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. This tree grows in coastal areas, dry mountains and moist foothills, and up to a height of 15 m. The leaves are ovate to elliptic and have orange petioles. The small white flowers are produced throughout the year on hanging axillary and terminal racemes and panicles. The fruits are red to black subglobose drupes.
