北アメリカの西部、ブリティッシュコロンビアからバハカリフォルニアにかけて分布しています。湿り気のある日陰に生え、高さは１０〜３５センチになります。多肉植物で、直径５センチほどの円形の葉が１個だけつきます。３月から７月ごろ、総状花序をだし、小さな白色の花を咲かせます。葉は食用になります。わが国では、「パースレインウィンター」という園芸名で流通しています。

スベリヒユ科クレイトニア属の一年草で、学名は Claytonia perfoliata。英名は Miner's lettuce、Indian lettuce。

The miner's lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata) belongs to Portulacaceae (the Purslane family). It is an annual herb that is native to western North America, British Columbia south to Baja California. This herb grows in moist, shady places and can reach 10-35 cm in height. It is a succulent plant and the leaf is solitary, circular to 5 cm wide. The raceme of tiny white flowers come in March to July. The leaves are edible.
