The Virginia springbeauty (Claytonia virginica) belongs to Portulaceae (the Purslane family). It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern North America. This herb grows in forests, roadsides, wetlands, and a height of 5-40 cm. It is a trailing plant and overwintering through a tuberous root. The leaves are slender lanceolate, 3-14 cm, with a 6-20 cm long petiole. The flowers are 0.7-1.4 cm in diameter with five pale pink or white (rarely yellow) petals, and bloom in a raceme from March and May. The seeds are released from the capsule fruit when it breaks open. The genus name honors Virginia botanist John Clayton.
