ヨーロッパに分布しています。亜高山帯の岩礫地や林内に生え、長さは１〜４メートルになります。葉は２回３出複葉で、披針形の小葉には鋸歯があります。春から夏にかけて、４個の花弁状の萼片をもつベル形の花を咲かせます。萼片は淡青紫色で、白い仮雄蘂があります。痩果には羽状毛が生えます。

キンポウゲ科センニンソウ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Clematis alpina。英名は Alpine virgin's bower。

The Alpine virgin's bower (Clematis alpina) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a deciduous shrub that is native to Europe. This shrub grows in subalpine gravels or woodlands and can reach 1-4 m in height. The leaves are biternate compound with lanceolate toothed leaflets. The bell-shaped flowers come in spring to summer. The sepals are pale bluish-purple with white staminodium. The fruits are achenes with long plumose.
