ヨーロッパに分布しています。標高２１００メートル以下の森や茂み、生垣などに生え、茎はときに非常に長く伸びます。葉は羽状複葉で、鋸歯のある小葉がつきます。６月から９月ごろ、大きな花序に芳香のある緑白色の花を咲かせます。果実は痩果で、長い羽状毛がつきます。

キンポウゲ科センニンソウ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Clematis vitalba。英名は Traveller's joy、Old man's beard。

The Traveller's joy (Clematis vitalba) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a deciduous climbling shrub that is native to Europe. This shrub grows in woods, scrubs and hedges, to 2100 m elevation, and sometimes with very long stems. The leaves are pinnate compound with toothed leaflets. The scented greeny-white flowers bloom in large clusters from June to September. The fruits are achenes with long hairy plumes.
