西インド諸島から中・南アメリカに分布しています。高さは２メートルにもなります。茎は地中で肥大して芋になります。長い葉柄があり、鏃形の大きな葉がつきます。「タロいも」よりも乾燥に強いので、熱帯地域で広く栽培されています。小芋や葉、葉柄が食用にされます。写真中３・下は園芸品種の「アウレア（cv. Aurea）」。

サトイモ科キサントソマ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Xanthosoma sagittifolium。英名は Yautia、New cocoyam。

The yautia (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is an evergreen perennial herbthat is native to the West Indies, Central and South America. This herb can reach about 2 m in height. The tuber grows thickening under ground and send out leaf stalks with large barracking-shaped leaf. This herb is more tolerant of drought than Taro, and cultivating widely in tropical areas. The small tubers, leaves and stalks are used for food. The 4th and bottom photos are a cultivar 'Aurea'.
