アフリカ西部の熱帯地方が原産です。高さは１２〜１８メートルほどになります。円錐花序に、黄白色で真ん中が赤紫色の萼片のある花を咲かせます。果実は長楕円形で褐色に熟します。このなかの種子はコーラナッツと呼ばれ、コーラの原料にされます。現地の人たちはこの種子を噛み、興奮剤や強壮剤として利用してきました。正式な和名では、「ひめコラのき（姫コラの木）」と呼ばれます。

The Cola nut (Cola acuminata) belongs to the family Sterculiaceae. It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the tropical regions of western Africa. It grows to a height of 12 to 18 m. It produces yellowish-white flowers with a reddish-purple calyx in the center in panicles. The fruit is an oblong that ripens to a brown color. The seeds are called cola nuts and are used to make cola. The local people chewed the seeds and used them as a stimulant and tonic. The official Japanese name is "hime-korano-ki".
