ヨーロッパからコーカサス地方が原産です。「ボリジ（Borago officinalis）」の近縁種で、高さは１メートルくらいになります。わが国へは、明治時代に導入され、家畜の飼料や食用として利用されました。全体に粗い毛に被われます。葉は大きな長楕円形で互生します。夏から秋にかけて、さそり状集散花序をだし、紫色から淡紅紫色、白色などの鐘形の花を咲かせます。全草に、ピロリジジンアルカロイドが含まれるため、現在では食用にはされていません。和名では「ひれはりそう（鰭玻璃草）」と呼ばれます。 |

The Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) belongs to Boraginaceae (the Borage family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe and the Caucasus region. This herb is closely related to Borage (Borago officinalis), and can reach about 1 m in height. It was introduced into Japan as a livestock feed and food in Meiji Period (1868-1912). The plant is covered with rough hairs. The leaves are large, oblong and alternate. The flowers are purple to pale magenta, white and bell-shaped, and bloom in the scorpioid cymes from summer to fall. Nowadays, Comfrey is not used for food, because the plants contain pyrrolizidine alkaloid. |
