アメリカの東南部から中南部に分布しています。湿地や氾濫原の林内に生え、高さは５メートルほどになります。枝は細く褐色から赤褐色をしています。葉は広披針形から狭楕円状卵形で対生し、先端が尖ります。春に集散花序をだし、白色から緑白色の花を咲かせます。果実は核果で、秋に青色に熟します。

ミズキ科ミズキ属の落葉低木で、学名は Swida foemina (syn. Cornus foemina)。英名は Stiff dogwood、Gray dogwood、English dogwood。

The stiff dogwood (Swida foemina) belongs to Cornaceae (the Dogwood family). It is a small deciduous tree that native to the east-southern and the central-southern United States. This tree grows in woodlands on marshes or flood plains, and can reach about 5 m in height. The branches are slender and gray to reddish-brown. The leaves are broad lanceolate to narrow elliptic-ovate and opposite with acute tips. The cymes are borne and bloom white to greenish white flowers in spring. The fruits are drupes and ripen blue in fall.
