The Fiery costus (Costus igneus) belongs to Zingerberaceae (the Ginger family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to the north and east of Brazil. It spreads by underground stems and grows to a height of about 60 cm in clusters. The dark green leaves are large, with a purplish underside, and are attached to the stem in a spiral pattern. Orange flowers, about 4 cm in diameter, bloom at the end of the stem almost all year round.
