「レタス」の変種で、「ロメインレタス」とも呼ばれています。地中海沿岸から西アジアが原産です。堅い茎と丈夫な葉で、紡錘形に半結球します。葉は苦味があり、シーザーサラダや炒め物に使用されます。名前は、ギリシャのコス島に因みます。別名で「たちちしゃ(立ち苣)」とも呼ばれます。
キク科アキノノゲシ属の一年草または二年草で、学名は Lactuca sativa var. longifolia。英名は Cos lettuce、Romaine lettuce。
The cos lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. longifolia) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a variety of lettuce and also called "Romaine lettuce". It is an annual or biennial herb that is native from coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea to West Asia. This herb grows in a fusiform-shaped semi-open head of sturdy leaves with a firm rib. The leaves have biiter taste, and are used for stir fried or Caesar salad. The common name derives from the Kos Island in Greece.
