アフリカの中部、ギニアから東へエチオピア西部、南へはコンゴ民主共和国に分布しています。熱帯雨林に生え、高さは３メートル以上になります。葉は楕円形でらせん状につきます。花は白色で濃赤色の縁と真ん中の黄色いラインがあり、茎の先端にある球状の穂状花序に咲きます。果実は楕円体の蒴果で、長さは１～１．５センチです。熱帯アフリカでは、頻脈や胃病の民間薬としてよく使われます。

The spiral ginger (Costus lucanusianus) belongs to Zingerberaceae (the Ginger family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to central Africa, from Guinea east to western Ethiopia and south to DR Congo. This herb grows in tropical forests and can reach up to 3 m in height. The leaves are elliptical and arranged spirally. The flowers are white with a dark red margin and a central yellow line, and bloom in the terminal, globose spike. The fruit are an ellipsoid capsule 1-1.5 cm long. It is commonly used as a medicinal plant for tachycardia and stomach complaints in tropical Africa.
