The Red cigar (Costus pulverulentus) belongs to Zingerberaceae (the Ginger family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed from Mexico to Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. It grows in tropical moist forests and is 1-2 m tall. The stems are usually whorled with narrowly ovate leaves. The leaves are 12 to 26 cm long, and the underside is covered with wooly hairs or pubescent hairs. The flowers are disk florets with red sepals. The fruit is an elliptic achene, 1 to 2.5 cm long.
