The Cotoneaster distichus belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small semi-evergreen tree that is found in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces of China, Tibet, and around the Himalayas. It grows in shrublands and grasslands at elevations of 1600 to 4000 m. It grows 1.2 to 2.4 meters high. The stiff branches are often arranged in pairs in two rows, and the twigs are covered with hairs. The leaves are usually double-rowed, dark glossy green, broadly ovate or elliptic. The flowers are white with pink blotches and are about 3 cm in diameter. The fruits are bright scarlet red. This species is treated by some authorities under the name Cotoneaster nitidus, "両列栒子" (liang lie xun zi).
