北アメリカに広く分布しています。湿り気のある草地や茂み、川沿いの土手などに生え、高さは１．２〜２．７メートルになります。葉は掌状に大きく３裂し、裂片はさらに切れ込みます。６月から８月ごろ、茎の先端に大きな複散形花序をつけ、白い花を咲かせます。わが国の「おおはなうど（Heracleum dulce）」の近縁です。

セリ科ハナウド属の多年草で、学名は Heracleum lanatum。英名は Cow parsnip、Hogweed。

The cow parsnip (Heracleum lanatum) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed widely to North America. This herb grows in moist grasslands, scrubs, and riverside banks, and it can reach 1.2-2.7 m in height. The leaves are large trilobate palmetely, moreover the segments are dissected. The large compound umbels are borne at the atip of stems, and the white flowers bloom from June to August. It is closely related to Sweet cow parsnip (Heracleum dulce).
