イギリスや地中海沿岸、アジア南西部が原産です。高さは２０〜２５センチほどになります。４月から５月ごろ、真ん中にオレンジの斑紋のある小さな黄色い花を咲かせます。古くから葉は去痰・鎮静剤として、薬用に使用されてきました。「カウスリップ（Cowslip）」の名前は、アングロサクソン語の「牛糞（cu-sloppe）」に由来します。牛や羊の放牧地によく生えていたからとか。和名では「きばなくりんざくら（黄花九輪桜）」と呼ばれます。写真中５〜６は、園芸品種の「サンセットシェード（cv. Sunset Shades）」。

サクラソウ科サクラソウ属の多年草で、学名は Primula veris。英名は Cowslip、Key of heaven。

The cowslip (Primula veris) belongs to Primulaceae (the Primrose family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea, Britain and southwestern Asia. This herb can reach 20-25 cm in height. The small yellow flowers with orange center appear from April to May. The leaves have been used medicinally as an expectorant or an abirritant from long ago. "Cowslip" come from the Anglo-Saxon "cu-sloppe", meaning cow-droppings, since the flower thrives on the grazing grounds of cattle and sheep. The 5th and 6th photos are cultivar 'Sunset Shades'.
