南アフリカ原産の「ふちべにべんけい（縁紅弁慶）」の枝変わり品種です。枝分かれした幹は年とともに太くなり、高さは８０センチほどになります。葉は棒状で、先端が平らにへこんでいるのが特徴です。葉は、寒くなると葉先が赤く色づきます。冬には、白色またはピンク色がかった白色で、雄しべがピンク色の小さな花を咲かせることがあります。別名では「うちゅうのき（宇宙の木）」と呼ばれます。
園芸品種名の「ゴラム」は、トールキンの小説「ホビットの冒険」や「指輪物語」に登場するホビット族のキャラクターに因むのでしょうか。

ベンケイソウ科クラッスラ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Crassula portulacea cv. Gollum (syn. Crussula ovata cv. Gollum)。英名は Gollum jade。

The Gollum jade (Crassula portulacea cv. Gollum) belongs to Crassulaceae (the Orpine family). It is an evergreen shrub that is a bud variation of the "Jade plant", which is native to South Africa. The branched trunk grows thicker with age, reaching a height of about 80 cm. The leaves are stick-shaped with flattened tips. The tips of the leaves turn red when it gets cold. In winter, it sometimes produces small white or pinkish-white flowers with pink stamens. It is also known as "Uchiyuno-ki" (space tree) in Japan.
The garden variety name 'Gollum' may be a reference to the Hobbit character in Tolkien's fantasy novels "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings".
