ユーラシアとアフリカ北部が原産です。乾燥した砂礫地や草原などに生え、高さは１０〜３０センチになります。地面を這って広がります。７月から８月ごろ、淡いピンク色や白色の小さな唇形花を咲かせます。殺菌作用や消化促進などに優れた効果があり、風邪をひいたときのハーブティーに使用されます。別名で「ようしゅいぶきじゃこうそう（洋種伊吹麝香草）」とも呼ばれます。写真上・中１〜２は、園芸品種の「アニーホール（cv. Annie Hall）」。

シソ科イブキジャコウソウ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Thymus serpyllum。英名は Creeping thyme、Wild thyme。

The Creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an evergreen sub-shrub that is native to Eurasian Continent and northern Africa. This shrub grows in arid screes or grasslands and can reach 10-30 cm in height. The stems are sprawling. The pale pink to white labiate flowers come in July and August. This herb has antiseptic property and relieve dyspepsia. The dried leaves are used for a herbal tea. The 1st to 3rd photos are a cultivar 'Annie Hall'.
