Crucianella maritima belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the western Mediterranean region. This herb grows on little rocky sandy shores of the coast, and up a height of 10-40 cm. It is a strictly psammophyte, which grows the central part of the dunes, forming a low and open woody colonies. The leaves are spatula, entire and whorled. It blooms small yellow funnel-shaped flowers in the spring and summer.
