中央アメリカの固有種です。熱帯の湿った林に生え、高さは１０〜１３メートルになります。幹は広がった基部の上で、直径１０〜１５センチです。幹の多くは根から変形した棘を持っています。葉は団扇状で、直径２メートルになります。地元では、葉は野生から収穫され、繊維の原料や屋根葺きのために使用されています。「パルマデエスコバ」はスペイン語で、「箒の椰子」の意味です。

ヤシ科ハリネヤシ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Cryosophila warscewiczii。英名は Palma de Escoba。

The Palma de Escoba (Cryosophila warscewiczii) belongs to Aracaceae (the Palm family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is endemic to Central America. This tree grows in tropical moist forests and up a height of 10-13 m. The trunk mesures 10-15 cm in diameter above its enlarged base. Much of the trunk bears spines transformed from roots. The leaves are fan-shaped and can be 2 m across. The leaves are harvested from the wild and used locally as a source of fibre and for thatching. "Palma de Escoba" is Spanish and means broom palm.
